What Is RAM?

Your computer’s short-term working memory.

Definition: RAM (random access memory) holds whatever your computer is working on right now: open apps, browser tabs and documents. It’s wiped when you shut down. Your files live on the SSD; RAM is the workspace.

Signs you need more RAM

Everything slows down when you have many tabs or apps open, switching between programs lags, and the computer feels fine after a restart but bogs down again later. For everyday use with lots of browser tabs, 8GB is a practical minimum today, and 16GB gives more breathing room.

Faulty RAM

A failing RAM module can cause random crashes, blue screens, or a computer that powers on with a black screen and beeps. We test memory as part of a free diagnosis.

Can my laptop’s RAM be upgraded?

It depends on the model. Many Windows laptops and nearly all desktops have RAM slots. Apple Silicon MacBooks and many ultra-thin laptops have RAM soldered to the board, so it can’t be added later. We’ll check before quoting.
