What Is a BSOD?
The Windows “Blue Screen of Death” and what it’s telling you.
Definition: A BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) is the full-screen error Windows shows when it hits a problem it can’t recover from. Windows stops to protect your data, shows a stop code, and restarts.
Write down the stop code
The blue screen shows a stop code such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, and sometimes a file name. Take a photo of it with your phone. It’s the single most useful clue for diagnosing the cause.
Common causes
Faulty or loose RAM, a failing SSD or hard drive, bad or outdated drivers (especially graphics drivers), overheating, or a recent Windows update or new hardware that doesn’t agree with the system.
One-off or repeated?
A single blue screen after an update can be a fluke. Repeated blue screens, especially with different stop codes, usually point to hardware. If the drive is suspected, back up your files as soon as possible.
