Software & Firmware Repair Terms

6 terms your technician uses when your phone won’t boot, is stuck in a loop, or needs a firmware restore.

IPHONE RESTORE STATE

DFU Mode

Device Firmware Update mode — the deepest restore state on an iPhone. Bypasses the bootloader entirely, allowing firmware to be written directly to chips. The screen stays completely black in DFU mode. Used when Recovery Mode fails to fix the issue.

IPHONE RESTORE STATE

Recovery Mode

A restore state showing a cable-and-computer icon on the iPhone screen. Used to reinstall iOS when the phone won’t boot normally. Always try “Update” before “Restore” — Update reinstalls iOS without erasing your data.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE

Firmware

Low-level software installed directly on a phone’s chips that controls all hardware operations. iOS and Android are both firmware. Corruption — from failed updates, storage faults, or water damage — causes boot loops, restore errors, and random reboots.

QUICK FIX

Hard Reset

A forced restart that clears temporary memory without erasing any data or settings. Always the first thing to try on a frozen or unresponsive phone — takes under 10 seconds. On iPhone 8 and later: press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Side button.

DEVICE IDENTITY

IMEI

The unique 15-digit identity number assigned to every phone. Dial *#06# on any phone to find it. Always check the IMEI before buying second-hand — it can reveal if the phone is stolen, carrier-locked, or has an active iCloud Activation Lock.

STARTUP FAULT

Boot Loop

When a phone repeatedly restarts without ever completing startup — stuck showing the brand logo over and over. Usually caused by corrupted firmware or a failed OTA update. Fix sequence: hard reset → Recovery Mode → DFU Mode → hardware diagnosis at PhoneDoctor.
