What Is the Alert Slider?

OnePlus’s 3-position physical switch for Silent, Vibrate, and Ring — and how to fix it when it fails.

Definition: The Alert Slider is a 3-position physical switch on the side of most OnePlus phones that instantly toggles between Silent, Vibrate, and Ring modes without needing to unlock the phone. It is one of OnePlus’s most distinctive hardware features and is absent on most competitor phones.

Why it matters for repair

The Alert Slider connects to the logic board via a small flex cable. If the slider becomes stiff, loose, or stops registering its position changes, the flex cable has likely failed or disconnected — a common result of the phone being dropped on that side. Repairing the Alert Slider requires opening the phone, which means all standard repairs (screen, battery) can be combined with an Alert Slider fix in a single disassembly.

Common Alert Slider faults

Slider doesn’t change modes: The flex cable connecting the slider to the logic board has failed. The physical switch moves but sends no signal.

Slider feels loose or wobbly: The slider mechanism has worn or the retaining clip broken — requires slider assembly replacement.

Phone stuck in one mode: Software glitch rather than hardware — a hard reset or OxygenOS cache wipe usually resolves this without opening the phone.
