What Is AMOLED?

Samsung’s Active Matrix OLED display technology — used in Galaxy S, A, Z Fold and Z Flip series.

Definition: AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is Samsung’s variant of OLED display technology where each pixel produces its own light and can switch completely off for true black. Used in Galaxy S, A52 and above, Z Fold, and Z Flip series.

Why it matters for your repair

Most Samsung screen repairs involve AMOLED panels. Samsung produces several tiers — Super AMOLED (mid-range), Dynamic AMOLED (flagships like S24), and Dynamic AMOLED 2X (S Ultra and Z Fold). The panel tier directly affects replacement cost. An OEM-grade panel maintains the original colour profile, HDR10+ support, and refresh rate. A budget aftermarket panel will show colour shifting, reduced brightness, and may drop from 120Hz to 60Hz — noticeable every time you scroll.

How AMOLED works

AMOLED uses a thin-film transistor backplane to drive each pixel individually and faster than standard OLED. In Samsung’s Super AMOLED, the digitiser (touch layer) is embedded directly into the display stack — making the phone thinner but meaning touch faults sometimes require a full screen assembly replacement rather than just the digitiser.

Common AMOLED faults

Green line fault: A vertical green line running down the screen indicates a damaged display driver IC or cracked panel — it will worsen and requires replacement.

Screen burn-in: Prolonged static content (navigation bars, keyboard) permanently etches ghost images into AMOLED pixels. Irreversible — only a screen replacement fixes it.

Purple/pink tint after drop: Internal panel damage from impact pressure — the screen may still display but with colour distortion. Panel replacement required.
