What Is the Apple T2 Chip?
The security chip inside 2018–2020 Intel MacBooks.
Definition: The T2 is a security chip Apple added to Intel-based Macs from 2018 to 2020, including MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. It encrypts the built-in storage, secures Touch ID, and checks that the Mac starts up safely. Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs build the same features into the main chip.
Why it matters for repairs
On T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted with keys held by the security chip. That means your data is tied to that specific board. If the board fails completely, the files can’t simply be pulled off the drive the way they could on older Macs, which is why backups matter so much.
Touch ID is paired too
The Touch ID sensor is paired to the security chip, much like Touch ID on iPhones. A replacement sensor won’t work without Apple’s pairing process, so we always tell you upfront whether Touch ID can be kept after a repair.
What this means for you
Keep regular Time Machine or iCloud backups. If your MacBook won’t power on, don’t let anyone “try things” on the board without explaining the data risk first. Board-level microsoldering that revives the original board is often the only way to recover un-backed-up files.
