What Is Touch ID?

Apple’s fingerprint authentication — and why replacing the Home button permanently disables it.

Definition: Touch ID is Apple’s fingerprint sensor built into the Home button of iPhones from iPhone 5S through iPhone 8, and the iPhone SE (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation). It uses a capacitive fingerprint scanner to authenticate unlocking, Apple Pay, and app purchases. The Touch ID sensor is cryptographically paired to the logic board at the factory.

Why replacing the Home button disables Touch ID

Apple’s Secure Enclave stores a unique cryptographic key that pairs the Touch ID sensor to the logic board. If the original Home button — which contains the fingerprint scanner — is replaced with any other button, including a genuine Apple button from another iPhone, Touch ID permanently stops working. The button’s physical functions (pressing, returning to home screen) still work, but fingerprint authentication is gone. This cannot be repaired at PhoneDoctor or anywhere else without Apple’s proprietary programming tools, which are only available to Apple Stores and authorised service providers.

Touch ID vs Face ID

Touch ID iPhones: iPhone 5S through 8, iPhone SE (all generations). Home button contains the fingerprint sensor.

Face ID iPhones: iPhone X onwards (excluding SE 3rd gen). TrueDepth camera replaces the Home button for authentication.

Touch ID on iPad: All iPads except iPad Pro (Face ID) and some newer iPad Air models use Touch ID — either in the Home button or the power button on the side.
