What Is Face ID?

Apple’s 3D facial recognition system — and why it cannot be repaired at third-party shops.

Definition: Face ID is Apple’s 3D facial authentication system, introduced on iPhone X (2017) and used on all iPhones from X onwards (except iPhone SE 3rd gen). It uses a TrueDepth camera array — comprising a dot projector, infrared camera, and flood illuminator — to map a 3D model of the user’s face.

Why Face ID is tied to the logic board

The Face ID module is cryptographically paired to the iPhone’s logic board during manufacturing. Apple’s Secure Enclave stores the mathematical face map and the unique pairing key linking it to the TrueDepth camera array. If the Face ID module — or the logic board — is replaced with a different unit, Face ID cannot be re-enabled. This is a deliberate security feature. PhoneDoctor can repair screen cracks and other damage without affecting Face ID — but physical damage to the TrueDepth camera array itself means permanent Face ID loss, even at Apple.

What damages Face ID

Impact to top of screen: The TrueDepth array sits at the top of the display. Corner drops that impact this area can damage the sensors directly.

Water damage: Corrosion on the Face ID flex cable or the Secure Enclave on the logic board can disable Face ID.

Screen replacement errors: Careless screen replacements that damage the Face ID cable running behind the panel. PhoneDoctor takes specific precautions during all screen repairs to protect the Face ID assembly.
