What Is OxygenOS?

OnePlus’s Android skin — known for being close to stock Android, now sharing code with ColorOS.

Definition: OxygenOS is OnePlus’s Android customisation layer, historically praised for being minimal and close to stock Android — unlike the heavier skins of Samsung or Oppo. Since OnePlus’s merger with Oppo under BBK Electronics, OxygenOS 13 and later share a significant codebase with Oppo’s ColorOS, making them more feature-rich but also more complex.

OxygenOS and repairs

Failed OxygenOS OTA updates are a common cause of OnePlus phones arriving at PhoneDoctor in a boot loop. The firmware reflash process for OnePlus uses MSMDownloadTool (for Qualcomm-based models) — the same tool used for many Oppo devices. PhoneDoctor can reflash OxygenOS firmware without erasing user data in most cases, provided the NAND storage chip is physically intact.

OxygenOS by version

OxygenOS 11 and earlier (OnePlus 9 and earlier): Minimal, close to stock Android. Highly regarded by Android enthusiasts.

OxygenOS 12 (OnePlus 10 series): Controversial — first version to heavily incorporate ColorOS code. Many features added, original minimalism reduced.

OxygenOS 13/14 (OnePlus 11, 12): More refined, closer to the original spirit while retaining ColorOS underpinnings. Improved stability.
