What Is the iPhone Logic Board?

Apple’s term for the main circuit board inside an iPhone — housing the A-series chip, RAM, storage and all core ICs.

Definition: Apple uses the term “logic board” for what other manufacturers call a motherboard. The iPhone logic board is the main circuit board containing the A-series processor (e.g. A18 on iPhone 16), RAM, NAND storage, Power IC, Touch IC, Face ID pairing data, and all communication chips. It is the single most expensive iPhone component to repair.

What makes iPhone logic boards unique

Unlike Android phones, iPhones use a stacked board design — two PCBs sandwiched together, connected by an interposer. This allows Apple to pack more functionality into a smaller space, but it makes repair significantly more complex. The stacked design means accessing a component on the inner board requires separating both layers — a delicate process that risks damage to the connecting interposer.

What’s paired to the logic board

Face ID module: Cryptographically paired — can never be replaced at a third-party shop.

Touch ID Home button: Cryptographically paired — replacement permanently disables fingerprint.

Camera system: From iPhone 12 onwards, the camera is paired — a replaced camera may show warnings or lose some features.

Battery: From iPhone 15 onwards, battery pairing via Apple’s system affects battery health reporting accuracy — though function is not impaired.

Logic board fault symptoms

Won’t power on after confirmed working battery and charger.

No service / searching after a drop — baseband chip or antenna connection damaged.

Restore error codes 4013, 4014, 9 — storage chip fault on the logic board.
