Design:
The first look at LG G6 is enough to mesmerize because of its huge display. The promising 5.7 inches’ screen with its 18:9 is a much taller and thinner as compared to the rest of the competition. In comparison to the Samsung S8 and Samsung S8+ that use a similar 18.5:9, it is a much handy mobile phone and it can easily be handled using one hand.
The design of the phone looks bulkier even though the LG G6 is 0.1mm thinner that the Samsung Galaxy S8 but the tapered edges of Samsung S8 give it an apparent edge. However, the size of G6 is smaller compared to the G%, which was released last year. G5 was 0.2mm thicker but was narrower and shorter.
The rear Gorilla Glass 5 panel and the front Gorilla Glass 3 seems an interesting combination. Indicating its increased chances of breakage from the front. However, the good thing is non-removable rear and battery which seems a good advancement compared to the previous version G5. This made G6, an IP68 certified phone and is capable of withstanding 30 minutes of 1.5 meter of water submersion, an LG flagship smartphone.
The aluminum exterior provides the phone with solid metal finished edges with better durability. And the rear fingerprint sensor can act as power button as well. While the dual camera only adds to its glory. The bottom id built with a type C USB port and speakers and the top holds a standard headphone jack.
Display:
With a resolution of 2880 × 1,440 pixels and 18:9, the 5.7 inches screen equates the 2:1 (2 squares fitting in one screen). The dimensions of 130 x 65mm results in a total screen area of 845mm², it is similar to the Samsung’s 5.8-inch 18.5:9 S8 phone. G6 is, even though a big screen experience, it is not as big as one may expect it based on that “5.7-inch” specification
The display of G6 is amazing with its crisp colors and edgy text. With one of the better LCD panels, the contrast, however, is not good enough to compete for S8. Built with an always on screen display, this phone enables its users to see time, battery and notifications even when the home screen is turned off. This feature, even though it is responsible for low battery life but it can be switched off anytime.
Currently, LG is the only phone that deals with the Dolby’s enhanced Dolby Vision HDR. It was the only as well for the HDR 10 format phones. Dolby uses frame by frame metadata that ensures best Display results. Thus, this HDR makes the phone produce better quality colors, hence, blessing the screen with an amazing display
Audio:
Being a brand that pays a lot of attention bringing out a very good audio quality mobile phone, LG has produced G6 with the V20 and its amazing Sabre ES9218 Quad DAC. The best thing is that LG is using a Sabre 32-bit Quad DAC once again in its G6 phone. The variant used is the Sabre ES9218+ this time. This DAC like the original one that is ES9218 also features sub-DAC configuration in parallel to improve the noise, reducing the total harmonic distortion in the phone’s audio
Through the LG HD recording application, 192 kHz FLAC audio records which is high-end 24-bit. Moreover, it contains only two Acoustic Overload Point microphone in comparison to the V20. However, LG has not paid much of its attention to the phone’s actual speakers. But it can be pulled off using any headphone pair which is a plus.
Software Features:
The LG G6 is equipped with an Android 7.0 Nougat software along with LG’s UX 6.0 user Interface. LG has not changed things in it much, just some menu settings and notification shade modifications. The rest of the feature are pretty much similar to the Chinese Smartphone brand features.
There are a number of themes to choose from with wallpaper, background and the same stuff. But there is a Multi-Window feature that makes a good use of the 5.7 inches mobile screen in 2:1, each application in its provided perfect square. However, an associated disappointment is that many of the LG’s own built-in apps do not go well with this multi-window feature.
It is the first smartphone that supports Google Assistance other than the Google’s own phones. Other built-in apps include Music, Gallery, Calendar, LG Health, File Manager, and FM Radio that works as well.
Performance Benchmark:
LG has opted for Snapdragon 821, which is almost 8 months old now. It would rather have waited for Snapdragon 835 processor which is a new flagship processor. Snapdragon 821 processor though is a good power level and does work great has now lost flagship owning position which must be kept in mind before its purchase. Moreover, as Samsung has overstocked Snapdragon 835 processor, it is facing quite a lack when it comes to the rest of the manufacturers.
